PROGRAM DESIGN

Core Innovation

The core innovation is the single-sex cohort looping model, which provides small cohorts of boys of color with rigorous instruction that promotes core subject matter learning while also developing social intelligence and leadership skills through collaboration and a broad range of life experiences. The program is focused on serving students who have been traditionally marginalized and impacted by school-based microaggressions.

The achievement gaps that exist today are an affront to a society committed to equal educational opportunity and a drag on the nation's economy, prosperity, and competitiveness.  - ETS Policy Notes, 2011

Boys Lab is committed to providing a high-quality curriculum that is guaranteed and viable. Currently, our students engage in standards-based lessons that are culturally relevant and responsive. All curriculum is highly rated by EdReports.org and is culturally and socially relevant and responsive.

"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." - Frederick Douglass

For Black males to have increased success in schools, there is a need to redefine the Black male student. There is a profound need to develop and reposition outlooks on what it means to be a Black male in settings in and of out of school.  - Hill, 2012

Boys Lab is committed to providing a space where boys are physically and emotionally safe. An educational space that is free of microaggressions and overly-punitive disciplinary approaches.

Boys Lab is committed to providing boys a learning space that is rigorous, engaging, safe, and joyful. Students' voice is amplified as they are co-directors of their education journey.

Boys Lab is purposed to provide a learning environment that allows all scholars the opportunity to develop a balanced approach to learning by strengthening their verbal, spatial, kinesthetic, auditory, and iconic skills. A place where scholars can explore different ways of learning, and where they (students) are the stars.

"If I could describe it in one word, it would be awesome."

Torrey Dantzler, 4th-grade Scholar
